When I was in high school I didn’t know a person who didn’t graduate high school. I always thought kids who dropped out of high school chose to drop out. The fact that Milwaukee Public Schools graduates 2/3 of Black students just seems very off. In Wisconsin 94% of white students graduate high school and 71% of black students graduate high school.
That is NOT OK.
From my perspective, our educational system was Created a long time ago and has adapted to help white kids get to college. It doesn’t account for poverty. It doesn’t account for tragedy. It doesn’t account for mental health. It doesn’t account for so many of the things that kids in Milwaukee neighborhoods (and many in the country) have to endure. I am not sure what to do about it, but I feel like these stats need to be known in our community. When we know of the injustices, we can start to come up with some solutions.
